CHOOSING THE RIGHT FISHING ROD? WHAT TO KNOW?

Choosing the right fishing rod for you can be bewildering, even annoying, as fly fishing producers are offering hundreds of different rods for sale. However, all fly rods differ mainly in their actions, building materials, and lengths. Rod manufacturers classify their rods’ basic actions as slow, medium, and fast. A slow action rod flexes thru its tip, mid and butt sections. Furthermore, a medium action rod flexes primarily in its mid and tip sections. And a fast action rod flexes majorly in its tip section.

All reputable rod makers list the line weight the rod will cast on their rods. A fly line’s first thirty feet weigh a uniform weight, and the action of the rod is balanced to cast that known and specified weight. Additionally, all fly line manufacturers designate uniform numbers for their line weights. Regardless of the manufacturer, fly lines come in weights from one to fifteen. Accordingly, these weight designations match all fly rods, fly lines, and fly reels: the smaller the number, the lighter the line weight. Below are commonly used line and rod weights which shall give you an idea on choosing the right fishing rod:

1-2 Weight Lines and Rods: Designed to cast a little fish at brief distances. Additionally, these rods are intended to make sensitive deliveries for small flies. Ideal for bluegills and crappies like small trout and panfish.

3 Weight Lines and Rods: Designed to cast short to medium distances with small flies; used for panfish and trout.

4 Weight Lines and Rods: Designed to cast medium-sized flies delicately at medium distances; used for panfish and trout.

5 Weight Lines and Rods: Designed to cast small, medium and long distances correctly with a broad spectrum of flies. Effective for trout, smallmouth bass, panfish, largemouth.

6 Weight Lines and Rods: A general all-around rod with many uses; designed for casting all distances well. It can be used for trout, pan-fish, bass, and steelhead.

7-8 Weight Lines and Rods: Designed to cast very large trout, bass, and big fish at long distances up to about fifteen pounds, including Atlantic and Pacific salmon and steelhead.

9-10 Weight Lines and Rods: Designed to cast heavy fish with big flies at lengthy distances of thirty to forty pounds. The fishes include bonefish, permit, striped bass, bonito, albacore, bluefish, redfish, and snook.

11-15 Weight Lines and Rods: Heavy saltwater rods for large fish like tarpon, billfish, etc.

Rod manufacturers use a range of materials to produce rods that include bamboo, fiberglass, graphite, and composites of graphite (which may include boron or titanium). Owing to their light weights and comparatively cheap expenses and the broad range of weights and sizes, graphite rods are the most popular.

Fiberglass rods are rarely used due to their restricted choices of actions and heavier weights. Additionally, bamboo rods are expensive due to their complicated manufacturing methods. Furthermore, bamboo rods weigh more than fiberglass and graphite rods and their activities tend to be slower than those of the graphite.

We hope that you have an idea of a basic understanding of choosing the right fishing rod.
