Tips on How to Deal with Difficult Neighbours

Neighbours and community are key aspects one needs to consider when investing in a home. Living in a space with understanding neighbours and a tight-knit community is ideal. Owners of luxury homes in Goa enjoy the benefit of privacy, having like-minded people as neighbours and living in a peaceful community. However, getting into a disagreement at some point with one of your neighbours is almost inevitable. This could be as little as parking issues to getting disturbed by their late-night renovations or obnoxiously loud parties. Despite enjoying the benefits of being surrounded by a community as it improves our well-being, makes us feel more secure, and fosters lifelong friendships, sometimes we may encounter unpleasant scenarios with our neighbours. What can one do if they are presented with an uncomfortable situation?

Do Not Respond with Anger

Even though you may be justifiably annoyed with certain unwarranted actions of your neighbour, do not let your anger overpower you or the conversation. Take a few moments to calm yourself down and regain composure before you attempt to respond.

Request for a Face-to-face Conversation

A tête-à-tête with an agitated neighbour can potentially help you read facial cues and understand the tone of voice. Often, text messages, emails, and any other electronic exchanges may be misinterpreted. A private conversation also increases your chances of convincing your neighbour. Remember to not directly accuse them of the problem, but rather explain your situation and suggest ways to solve or rectify the situation together.

Lend a Listening Ear

Attempt to understand before trying to be understood. While you may employ the approach of getting your inconveniences across in a constructive manner, it is also important to be cooperative and thoughtful when your neighbour provides a new or personal perspective. This may also lead to information that you were previously unaware of and that may be helpful in resolving the issue. Making your neighbour feel ignored instead of heard can lead to arguments. Remember to respond to any requests or complaints made by your neighbour in the way you would like to be treated. If you are willing to invest your time and energy into resolving a matter and making their lives better, they are more likely to extend the same courtesy.

Work Together Towards a Solution

Having understood the root of your neighbour’s problem, work with them to arrive at a workable solution. The goal is to resolve the issue, keeping both parties’ interests in mind. If the calm and rational approach does not seem to yield positive results, then consider bringing in a mediator that will help both parties reach an amicable solution.

Maintain Records of your Exchanges

Primarily, the objective is to resolve any situation peacefully. However, consider maintaining records of your exchanges with each other. In the event that you may have to involve local authorities to help settle an issue, all relevant information should be accessible. Note down the dates and times, and also save any interactions like text messages and emails so that you have the required information at your fingertips. This information will be useful for the police, an attorney, or housing authorities.

Conduct Proper Research Before taking Action

Carry out thorough research before taking any legal action or turning your distress into a formal complaint. Consult a lawyer, talk to the developer, or conduct an extensive internet search to gain an understanding of the neighbourhood rules and regulations and what the local law on the issue is. Gently communicate with your neighbour that the rules or the law are on your side. Avail a consultation with an experienced attorney in the real estate sector for better insight. Provide all the details so that the attorney may help evaluate your available options and decide the next course of action. Involve the police only if it is a justifiable cause and as a last resort. This path should be taken only if you feel threatened or harassed by your neighbour.

All in all, observe the neighbourhood and connect with the locals of the area to gain an understanding of the investment you will be making. And remember to only escalate the situation if the situation demands it. Most conflicts can be resolved through an honest and /calm conversation.
