For the performance of the holy rituals of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage, it’s necessary for a pilgrim to be in the state of Ihram. Though the Ihram is generally referred to as the specific clothing that pilgrims wear, it is rather a state of absolute purity. Therefore, for anyone arriving in the kingdom through the cheapest hajj packages, assuming Ihram before crossing the Miqat boundary is necessary. Otherwise, a penalty will be due for the pilgrim who has crossed the Miqat region without having entered the state of Ihram.
When a person assumes the state of Ihram, certain acts and things become forbidden for him/her which are permissible otherwise. Hence, a pilgrim has to avoid all such acts until the rituals of the Hajj or Umrah complete and he/she gets out of Ihram. Here’s a brief description of them.
Removing anything from the Skin.
Pilgrims are not allowed to remove anything from their skin i.e., trimming or plucking their hair or clipping nails until they relinquish the state of Ihram known as ‘Tahalul’ by shaving the head (for men) or clipping of hair (for women) and throwing pebbles at Jamarat-ul-Aqabah.
Perfume/scent.
It’s not permissible to use any sort of fragrance or perfume while in the state of Ihram. Though there is nothing wrong with using scented soap (as per the need) but it is better advised to avoid it as well. Therefore, only use unscented soaps or other toiletries while in the state of Ihram out of caution.
Can you wear money belts?
Yes, it is allowed for pilgrims to wear money belts, belts or use handkerchiefs. These things don’t nullify the state of Ihram
Intimacy with Spouse.
For pilgrims, having a physical relationship with a spouse is forbidden in Ihram. Otherwise, a penalty will be due for such pilgrims.
Killing an insect or Hunting.
Pilgrims are not allowed to chase and kill desert animals i.e., hunting for food because it is also included under the prohibitions in the state of Ihram. In fact, killing an insect is not allowed. If anyone does do knowingly, a penalty is due.
Ihram rules specific for women.
It is permissible for women to wear socks and shoes in the state of Ihram. However, they are not permitted to wear a Niqab i.e., a face veil or gloves during the holy rituals since the Messenger of Allah Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) forbade the pilgrim women from doing so.
Ihram rules specific for men.
Male pilgrims are not allowed to wear any sort of sewn clothes in the state of Ihram. It’s also prohibited for them to cover their head in the state of Ihram. However, an umbrella can be used for shade under sunlight. In addition, the ankles of the male pilgrims must remain uncovered at all times.
These are some of the basic and most important Ihram restrictions to be mindful of.
